Year 6
Summer 1: Would you rather be an Athenian or a Spartan?
We are very excited to be back in school with you all and are looking forward to a fabulous half-term ahead.
The Year 6 Team
We have a fabulous team here in Year 6. Mrs Remington Davidson and Mrs Moss teach in Violet Class whilst Miss Wykes teaches in Lilac Class. We also have Mrs Dennis, Ms Faboud and Mr Geen, our wonderful TAs who work across both classes.
Summer 1: Greek Mythology
During this term, we will be continuing with our topic of Ancient Greece, reminding ourselves of where the Ancient Greeks fit into the chronology of the world’s history and their influence on the Western world. We will also consier what evidence such as the ruins at Knossos, Crete, has to tell us about the blurred boundary between historical fact and mythological tales like that of Theseus and the Minotaur. Finally, we will consider why there might be more than one version of events from key moments in ancient history, such as the Battle of Troy.
English
In English lessons, we are going to be exploring our new class text, ‘The Adventures of Odysseus’, inspired by Homer’s Odyssey. Children will recount the events of the story, write re-imaginings of the narratives as well as writing newspaper reports on the events which occur, such as the skinking of ships or dangerous battles.
Maths
In Maths this half-term, we will be continuing with our learning around the topic of ‘Algebra’ from before the Easter Break before moving on to using our knowledge of mathematical structures to calculate unknowns’. We will then move to recapping some of the key topics we have covered this year in order to consolidate our learning and prepare us both for SATs week and our journey to secondary school.
PE
This half-term, our PE sessions will be on Tuesdays (Indoor) and Thursdays (Outdoor). On a Tuesday, children will need to bring in a PE kit to change in to and on Thursdays, they will need to come in wearing their PE kit and bring a change of clothes to change in to afterwards.
During our PE lessons, we will be continuing with our Indoor Unit of Gymnastics, focusing on using our knowledge of the principles of gymnastics, particularly body tension and consistency of movement, to work collaboratively and imaginatively to compose motifs. In Outdoor PE, we will continue to work on the Decathlon as a discipline within Athletics, looking at famous decathletes and their training routines. We will be applying different methods of training, including interval training and circuit training, to practise events involving running, jumping and throwing. We will be focusing on our learning dispositions of resilience and reflection when improving our stamina and when evaluating our own performance as well as others’.
Homework
Homework will be set on a Friday afternoon in Year 6. Instructions will be posted on Google Classroom and tasks will often include a Maths and English task on SATs Companion as well as Spelling, Handwriting or Maths Fluency. In addition, we encourage children to be reading daily, sharing these experiences with those at home wherever possible.
